Lady Gaga Wanted ‘Born This Way’ To Be ‘A Viral Message’

‘BTW’ video creative director Laurieann Gibson says Gaga recruited director Nick Knight to push the envelope.

If it wasn’t clear from watching Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” video, the singer intended for the over-the-top clip to be a visual spectacle. And that’s why she wanted fashion photographer Nick Knight onboard to direct.

“Well, that was completely from the gate. She was like, ‘I want Nick Knight for this video, I want a visual,’ ” the video’s creative director, Laurieann Gibson, explained to MTV News. “She was always birthing something visual in her head. [Knight's] prolific, but he’s so genius visually. He’s such an Englishman. He’s so particular and everything must be spot-on. [The video] was about a beautiful photograph and it was about pushing the bar; it is a viral message. Nick was flawless.”

Many of the visuals in the video are tied to the dance, which Gibson choreographed for the splashy sci-fi-style video.

“At first, when I thought about birthing a new race and adding the prosthetics, I thought that maybe they should have a certain way they should walk or maybe they move a certain way, but then I realized it is actually a race within our race; it’s a mindset,” Gibson recalled. “So they don’t have to walk funny,” she said of the figures in the video.

Instead, Gibson focused on how she to interpret the song’s feel-good message in the moves. “So I just told the story of the record,” she said. “We birth ourselves out of the womb. There’s lots of pushing and birthing [in the video]. There’s lots of punching through the adversity, and then we go to church. So it’s very symbolic, it’s really based in modern dance: She’s doing [Martha] Graham. She’s doing [Lester] Horton. These are legitimate dance techniques.”

Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars, Muse Added To Grammy Show

Usher, Jaden Smith, B.o.B, Janelle Monae and Lady Antebellum will also perform on February 13.

While Willow Smith is the one who made music headlines with “Whip My Hair” last year, it’s her brother, “Karate Kid” actor Jaden Smith, who will take the stage at the upcoming 53rd Grammy Awards in a special performance alongside Usher and Justin Bieber, with whom he collaborated on the song “Never Say Never” last summer.

The trio joins a list of new performers added to the show on Thursday (January 20) that will also include another power trifecta made up of B.o.B, Bruno Mars and Janelle Monáe, according to a press release from the Recording Academy announcing the additions to the February 13 telecast from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Also taking the stage next month will be nominees Muse and Lady Antebellum. They will join a roster of previously announced performers that includes Eminem, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Arcade Fire, Cee Lo Green and Miranda Lambert. It will be the first time on the Grammy performance stage for Bieber, B.o.B, Lambert, Mars, Monáe, Muse and Smith. Eminem, Green, Gaga, Perry, Usher and Lady Antebellum will be making return visits for the occasion.

While 11-time Grammy winner Eminem leads the pack in nominations this year (with 10 nods), Mars has seven nominations, and Gaga and Lady Antebellum are not far behind with six nods each. B.o.B has notched five, Perry and Green are each up for four, and Arcade Fire and Lambert are vying for three awards. Bieber, Muse, Usher and Monáe are each nominated for two Grammys.

No details of the collaborative performances were released, but the Grammy announcement promised a rare, never-before-seen event for the Mars, B.o.B and Monáe segment.

With the addition of Antebellum, all five Album of the Year nominees (Eminem, Arcade Fire, Gaga, Perry) are now scheduled to perform on the show. Additional performers, presenters and special segments will be announced soon.

Which Grammy performance are you most looking forward to? Talk about it in the comments!

Lady Gaga’s ‘Judas’ Video Will Be ‘A Roller-Coaster Ride,’ Creative Director Says

‘I’m so excited for how riveting, energetic and electric the record is, something really phenomenal,’ Laurieann Gibson says.
By Jocelyn Vena

It’s an exciting time to be a Lady Gaga fan. This week, the pop star released her much-anticipated “Born This Way” video and walked the runway and previewed her track “Government Hooker” at a Thierry Mugler fashion show. And now there are a few more details about her next Born This Way single, “Judas,” and its video.

“We’re already getting ready to go into rehearsal [for the video]. She’s like, ‘I’m all ready to start ‘Judas’!’ She’s ready,” Gaga’s creative director Laurieann Gibson told MTV News. “And ‘Judas’ is exciting for me because we had this amazing artistic approach to ‘BTW’ and I’m so excited for how riveting, energetic and electric the record is, something really phenomenal. So, visually, the dance, the costuming, the idea of how big we’re trying to go, [it's] going to be a roller-coaster ride.

“There is [a director in mind],” Gibson continued, adding that nothing about the video will be ordinary. “What is a traditional music video? Even if we go with a traditional music video, the directors that we love are not traditional, so the idea that they get to collaborate with us means they too want to live outside of what people expect a traditional music video to be.”

As for the sound of the song, Fernando Garibay, one of the musical directors on the album, opened up about the RedOne-produced dance tune. “It’s a statement about, again I can’t speak for her, but what I gather is it’s about sometimes not choosing the right choice,” he explained. “But you can’t deny that the choice is not a part of you and who you are.

” ‘Judas’ is a dance song, definitely,” he continued. “I think ‘Judas’ is in the traditional RedOne/Gaga vein. It’s great because it’s a serious message, it’s a little playful, but still serious, but still somehow you wind up dancing to it. That’s what’s great about her music. You know, like, my favorite song of all time, dance song, ‘Billie Jean,’ is a story you wouldn’t think of singing, but then you wind up dancing and singing the lyrics. I think that’s the Holy Grail of music for me, which is dance.”

Gaga shared lyrics from “Judas” last month, and Gaga’s pal and stylist Nicola Formichetti reposted those lyrics on Twitter late Thursday. “I’m just a Holy Fool, oh baby he’s so cruel, but I’m still in love with Judas, Baby,” he wrote, adding, “JUDAS FASHION. so excited i can’t sleep!”

Exclusive: Ke$ha Talks Writing Britney Spears’ ‘Till The World Ends’

‘It’s an honor to write for one of pop music’s biggest icons,’ she tells MTV News.

Britney Spears’ new single, “Till the World Ends” is dance-floor ready — just ask Ke$ha. The pop star in her own right wrote the just-released track, which was produced by Dr. Luke and Max Martin.

“I consider myself a songwriter before and above everything else, so it’s an honor to write for one of pop music’s biggest icons. And I hope it gets everyone’s ass on the dance floor cuz y’all know that’s what K-Monay does best!” the singer said in an exclusive statement to MTV News.

The single was posted by Perez Hilton on Thursday afternoon (March 3), after speculation earlier in the day that it would hit radio next week.

“Till the World Ends” is a swirling, “beat the beat” track, ready for late nights spent “dancing till the world ends” as she sings on the fast-paced party jam. “This kitten got your tongue tied in knots I see/ Spit it out ’cause I’m dying for company,” a confident Spears purrs.

Later in the song, she sings: “See the sunlight/ We ain’t stopping/ Keep on dancing till the world ends/ If you feel it/ Let it happen/ Keep on dancing till the world ends.”

Last month, Ke$ha talked with Spin.com about the song, saying it’s about the power of an artist performing a great gig. “That song is me imagining her and any female musician touring the world,” she said. “You know, when you go out, and you’re having an amazing, magical night and you don’t want to go to sleep and you want it to last until the world ends.”

This new track is the latest single from Spears’ forthcoming Femme Fatale, which drops March 29.

What do you think about the latest Britney song? Let us know in the comments!

Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez Just Latest Celebrity/Paparazzi Encounter

Big-name stars like Justin Timberlake, Kanye West and Britney Spears have also had tense run-ins with photographers.
By Jocelyn Vena

For many celebrities, their relationship with the prying lens of the paparazzi has always been love/hate. Some bask in the attention and others complain of being hounded relentlessly by hungry photographers. This week, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez were caught up in a paparazzi kerfuffle while celebrating the Biebs’ 17th birthday in Los Angeles.

After giving the paps the finger during the encounter, Bieber later apologized via Twitter. But he’s only the latest in a long history of celebrity/celebrity-photographer encounters: Everyone from Lily Allen to Coldplay’s Chris Martin to Sean Penn (the king of paparazzi knockdowns) has had heated moments with the paps. Here, we look back at some of the more memorable run-ins.

Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz
Like Bieber and Gomez, then-couple Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz were involved in a scuffle with the paps in 2006. Diaz claimed a photographer tried to run her over, while the photographer claimed the actors had trapped him as he was trying to get away.

Björk in Bangkok
Björk lashed out a photographer at Bangkok airport in 1996, attacking a female photog who was trying to take pictures of her as she made her way through the airport. Things quickly got physical. The singer also attacked a paparazzo in 2008 in New Zealand, also at an airport, ripping his shirt.

Britney Spears and an Umbrella
During a more trying time in Britney Spears’ life, the singer, who had recently shaved her head, attacked a paparazzo’s SUV as a pack of photographers looked on. Using an umbrella to carry out the attack, it was believed that Britney was feeling the pressure of the prying paparazzi lens when she wailed on that car in 2007.

Russell Brand and Katy Perry
In 2010, Russell Brand attacked several paparazzi while he and his soon-to-be-wife Katy Perry made their way through LAX. Brand was convinced the photogs were tying to sneak inappropriate pics of Perry.

Kanye West and the Bodyguard
Kanye also had a moment with paps at an airport. West and his bodyguard Don Crowley got into a physical altercation with a photographer in 2008 at LAX. Both he and Crowley were accused of ruining camera equipment after a photog attempted to take the rapper’s photo.

David Arquette In A Head-On Car Crash

Recently rehabbed actor’s car veered into oncoming traffic, TMZ reports.
By Kara Warner

Photo: John Shearer/ Getty Images

Actor David Arquette was involved in a head-on collision Friday (March 4) while driving in Los Angeles.

According to TMZ, the recently embattled actor was driving in West Hollywood, California, when his car veered into oncoming traffic. A photograph posted on the site shows Arquette lying on his back in the grass with his eyes closed and his hands crossed over his chest.

The gruesome description from TMZ reads that Arquette is allegedly injured, “lying on the ground right now — bleeding — as fire trucks are racing to the scene.”

Given the developing nature of this report, there has been no official statement or comment released by the actor’s team that addresses Arquette’s current condition.

The “Scream 4″ actor has had a difficult few months beginning last October when he and his wife of 11 years, Courteney Cox, announced their plans to separate. Since that announcement, Arquette spent time at a rehabilitation facility to deal with alcohol abuse and “other issues.”

“Everybody’s worried and concerned about me,” Arquette said during one of a series of revealing interviews with friend and radio host Howard Stern. “I’ve been drinking a lot because I’m heartbroken. It’s really a personal, traumatic thing. … When I drink, I become a maniac.”

Arquette had previously revealed to Stern details about his sex life with his ex and his distress over the separation. At the time he checked into rehab earlier this year, Courteney Cox told People magazine, “I really admire David and his choice to take charge and better his life. I love and support him.”

Britney Spears May Release Ke$ha-Penned Track As Next Single

‘Till The World Ends’ expected out sometime next week.
By Jocelyn Vena

Slowly but surely, fans are getting a taste of what Britney Spears’ March 29 album release, Femme Fatale, will sound like. On Wednesday, Spears slowed things down with the tease for her track “Criminal” and psyched fans up with the news that she worked with Travis Barker on the album.

Fans are speculating that the next single released will be the Ke$ha-penned track, “Till the World Ends.” Art for the single’s cover, in which Spears appears sitting on a couch in a sweater and heels, was posted at Deezer.com.

A 30-second snippet of the song appeared on Amazon.de, which indicates that the single will be available on March 11. The track sounds like a fist-pumping anthem, and the sample showcases Spears’ electronically enhanced vocals going “Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh.”

The single will reportedly drop sometime next week, according to a tweet sent out by Tampa radio station 93.3 FM. “Hearing from Jive Records that we’ll have a new @BritneySpears single to play next week!”

Ke$ha recently dished about the track to Spin.com, noting that the song is about the power of an artist performing a great gig. “That song is me imagining her and any female musician touring the world,” she says. “You know, when you go out, and you’re having an amazing, magical night and you don’t want to go to sleep and you want it to last until the world ends.”

Spears’ longtime manager Larry Rudolph recently told MTV News that he’s super-excited about the next single off Femme Fatale. “I don’t think I’ve been this excited about releasing a Britney single in many, many years,” he said. “It’s that good. That’s all I’m gonna say about it at the moment. I haven’t heard a final mix of it, but I should get it in the next day or two. So far, what I’ve heard is just extraordinary. It really is amazing. Her fans will be very happy with it. I’m trying hard to get it out before the album comes out.”

For those keeping count, it’s not the first time Ke$ha and Spears have worked together. Ke$ha appeared on the Circus song “Lace and Leather.” “I just did backgrounds for her ’cause I was so broke. I needed to pay my rent,” she shared back in 2009. “I got a few bucks. No, [I didn't meet her]. I just did backups for her.”

Lady Gaga’s ‘Judas’ Video Will Be ‘A Roller-Coaster Ride,’ Creative Director Says

Justin Bieber’s Hair Gets $40,668 At Auction

Proceeds will benefit animal-rights group the Gentle Barn Foundation.

Last week, shortly after the haircut heard ’round the world, Justin Bieber gave a lock of his famous hair to Ellen DeGeneres. The talk-show host graciously took the gift and promised to auction if off and give all the proceeds to charity.

In addition to the lock of hair, Bieber also signed a plastic box in which the hair would be kept. On Wednesday (March 2), 98 bids later, the Bieber memorabilia had sold for $40,668. All the proceeds from the hair will go to the Gentle Barn Foundation, a California-based animal-rights organization.

When Bieber appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” to give the talk-show host the hair, he reassured her that it was, in fact, his. “Yes, it’s really my hair, but there’s a perk: I wanted to do something good. I’m giving pieces of it to different people,” he explained during the February 23 appearance. “The thing is, we’re doing something special. We want you to donate it to whatever charity you want.”

He also joked about what inspired him to cut off his signature locks. “I was inspired by yours,” Bieber laughed. “Yeah [people were freaking out], but I was like, ‘I don’t really care.’ ”

Perez Hilton was also one of the lucky hair recipients. On February 22, the blogger wrote, “Not only did Justin Bieber get a haircut, but the teen phenom tells us that he is going to be divvying up his shorn locks to help raise money for different charities. And, he’s giving Perez some of his hair to auction off! We’re working it all out now, and we can’t wait to tell you what good we hope to do with Bieber’s hair!”

What do you think of the final price for Justin’s hair? Let us know in the comments!

Hearts were broken, some dreams were dashed and others were realized while a trio of singers was saved from the pop-culture trash heap on Thursday night during the two-hour “American Idol” results show.

We reached out to some of our favorite “Idol”izers to get their take on the action on the elimination extravaganza, and while they all had their complaints about who did and didn’t make the cut, the one thing they could all agree on was that Stefano Langone absolutely killed it when the chips were down.

Entertainment Weekly critic Annie Barrett said that for the most part, the top 13 was dead-on. “Everyone who we knew in our hearts should be in the top 10 was voted in,” she said of such finalists as Casey Abrams, Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery, Jacob Lusk, James Durbin, Paul McDonald and Pia Toscano.

“The one surprise was that Haley Reinhart was voted into the top 10 by America,” she said of the singer who did a competent but unimpressive take on “Fallin’ ” by Alicia Keys this week. “I don’t think she would have gotten a judges’ wild card.” Barrett was firmly behind the decision to give Langone a second chance and said he killed it during his take on Smokie Norful’s “I Need You Now,” which she said was full of feeling and emotion.

As for the other wild-card winners, Barrett said Naima Adedapo did a nice job after choosing the wrong song on Wednesday night and proved she deserved to be on the show, but she wasn’t feeling Ashthon Jones. “I didn’t think she was good last night,” said Barrett of Jones’ just-OK attempt at the “Dreamgirls” number “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.”

“I’m surprised, but not surprised they wanted her because of who she is and what she looks like,” said Barrett. “She has that diva attitude and she’s a good character, so it’s good casting.”

MTV’s resident “Idol” expert, Jim Cantiello, for one, was pissed at America and the judges for not giving Bette Midler-esque Lauren Turner another chance. “I’m livid with the judges for not letting her sing for a wild-card spot,” said Cantiello of the sassy former housecleaner. “Other than that, I’m not mad at the results, a far cry from last season’s semi-final bloodbath. Brett [Loewenstern] and Rachel [Zevita] were fun distractions, Robbie [Rosen] and Kendra [Chantelle's] attempts at nuance went over the collective head of the voters, and Tim [Halperin] and Julie [Zorrilla] were both contestants who wilted without instruments.”

For Cantiello, and for everyone, really, the night’s highlight was wild card Langone’s game-changing “I Need You Now,” which he said blew him away. “By the end of the two hours, America (and the judges) had selected a diverse, solid top 13 that should have us all glued to our TVs for the rest of the season. We have belters, young countrified whippersnappers, two sassy divas (one male, one female), a sex kitten, an exotic flower, a hair-metal throwback, and however you’d categorize Paul McDonald and Casey Abrams.”

TVLine.com “Idol” recapper Michael Slezak, was adamant about one thing: Chantelle was robbed, robbed, he tells you! “Call 911, that was a felony!” he said of Chantelle’s failure to earn a wild-card berth despite what he called her show-stopping performance of “Georgia on My Mind” during her second-chance slot on Thursday’s show. “There’s no way you can tell me [after that performance] that the judges didn’t have minds made up of who was going into the top 13. I think those six performances we saw were a bit of ‘Idol’ theater more than them making their decisions.”

Slezak also had high praise for Langone’s slam-dunk effort, saying the judges had already declared how much they liked him on Tuesday, even if America didn’t seem ready to commit. He thought the top 13 was solid and has him excited in a way last season’s finalists didn’t, mostly because there are no clear front-runners amid a talented group of vocalists who all have different, interesting strengths.

“Last year, Crystal, Lee and Big Mike had already emerged at this point as ones to watch,” he said. “But while some of this year’s contestants have gotten more airtime, there are seven or eight [contestants] with a legitimate chance to take home the top prize.”

Among his picks to watch are Toscano, whose story we haven’t really heard yet and who clearly was saving something in the tank considering her wow-worthy final slot on . He also likes McDonald’s “young Bradley Cooper-meets Mumford & Sons” look and style, though he worries the smiling singer’s quirky nature could doom him to “Idol” also-ran status.

“I’m hoping Stefano remembers that feeling every time he takes the stage,” Slezak said of Langone’s go-for-broke emotional performance in the wild-card round. “It would behoove the other contestants to play that every time they take the stage to remind them that it’s do-or-die each time.”

New ‘Never Say Never’ Clip Shows Justin Bieber Singing With Fan

The ‘Director’s Fan Cut’ teaser captures the teen sensation performing an acoustic version of ‘Baby’ with a young girl.

Earlier this week, “Never Say Never” director Jon Chu promised MTV News that his new “Director’s Fan Cut” of Justin Bieber’s 3-D flick would deliver 40 minutes of fresh footage, including different songs (such as “Favorite Girl”), some more shirtless shots of the teen singer (“Maybe some abs!”) and extra scenes of him interacting with fans.

video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player

With the recut movie hitting theaters on Friday (February 25), Paramount Pictures has released a clip showing just that: the Biebs hanging out with some of his young fanatical followers. The 71-second promo shows Bieber — pre-haircut, of course — at an intimate gathering in Phoenix. While the pop star gives an acoustic performance on a small stage, his fans beg him to play “Baby,” but he jokes, “I don’t know that song.”

He then declares to a very young fan, “I’ll only sing ‘Baby’ if you come up here and sing it with me.” Cue the cuteness. The girl sits on his lap and together they belt out the hit single.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Bieber show off an easy, breezy way with his youngest fans. Last year, he popped up on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to surprise a 3-year-old Belieber named Cody who’d become an Internet sensation after her sister posted a video of her crying over the teen heartthrob on YouTube. As he tweeted later, “Makin faces with Cody!”

The re-released “Never Say Never” represents an effort both to goose box-office receipts three weeks after the film’s initial opening and to feed the Beliebers’ seemingly insatiable appetite for anything and everything connected to the star.

“We originally had a two-and-a-half-hour version of the movie, which we obviously couldn’t release,” Chu explained to us. “So we started to think about putting stuff back in that didn’t have to do with our story but that we knew people would love.”

Are you planning to go see the “Director’s Fan Cut” of “Never Say Never”? Let us know in the comments.

Adele’s 21 Debuts At #1 On Billboard 200

British singer knocks Justin Bieber from top spot, but Biebs still has two albums in top five.
By Gil Kaufman

We called it! As predicted on MTV News last week, Grammy-winning British soul sister Adele will nab the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart next week with her new album, 21, which sold 352,000 copies to easily take the crown.

According to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, that was more than enough to outpace last week’s #1, Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never – The Remixes, which drops a spot to #2 as sales trailed off by 38 percent to 102,000. The 17-year-old pop sensation has nothing to worry about, though, as the remix effort was just one of two albums he has in the top five, the other being his nearly year-old My World 2.0, which lands at #5 on sales of 42,000.

In an otherwise slow week with few new releases, most of the rest of the top 20 saw double-digit declines, as the Grammy effect started to wear off on a number of artists. The rest of the top 10: Mumford & Sons, Sigh No More (#3, 71,000, down 46 percent), NOW 37 (#4, 58,000, down 37 percent), Bruno Mars, Doo-Wops & Hooligans (#6, 37,000, down 40 percent), Eminem, Recovery (#7, 34,000, down 44 percent), Rihanna, Loud (#8, 33,000, down 26 percent), Nicki Minaj, Pink Friday (#9, 32,000, down 30 percent) and Lady Antebellum, Need You Now (#10, down 67 percent).

Though she couldn’t pull off the Bieber top five double-play, Adele’s 2008 debut, 19, continues its march back up the charts, jumping 34 spots to #16 on sales of 18,000. Meanwhile, the short-lived Grammy bump for Arcade Fire seems to be over, as the disc slips five spots to #17 as sales plummeted by 59 percent to 17,000. And after coming in at #13 last week, Bright EyesThe People’s Key dives 28 slots to #41 as sales trailed off by 72 percent to 11,000.

Former Fall Out Boy singer Patrick Stump has a modest debut at #67 with his first EP, Truant Wave (7,000).

Things were much the same on the iTunes charts, where Adele tops the album tally, followed by Mumford, Bieber’s My World 2.0 and his remix album, then Adele’s 19, Rihanna, Lupe Fiasco‘s Lasers, Stump, Florence and the Machine‘s Lungs and Eminem.

Lady Gaga continues to lord over the iTunes singles chart with “Born This Way,” edging out Cee Lo Green‘s “Forget You.” Jennifer Lopez‘s “On the Floor” comes in at #3, followed by Rihanna’s “S&M,” Katy Perry‘s “E.T.” and Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep.” Rounding out the list are Dr. Dre and Eminem with “I Need a Doctor” (#7), Pink‘s “F—in’ Perfect,” Ke$ha‘s “Blow” and Bruno Mars’ “Grenade.”

Things should be pretty static at the top next week, with the only new releases coming from former Floetry member Marsha Ambrosius, as well as new albums from Lucinda Williams and Harry Connick Jr. and the debut from former Oasis singer Liam Gallagher’s new band, Beady Eye.

Usher’s ‘OMG’ ‘ ‘Kills It Every Night,’ Says Tourmate Miguel

‘There’s so much anticipation for this song when he comes out,’ Miguel says of MTV News’ Song of the Year.
By Vaughn Trudeau Schoonmaker

MTV News just named Usher’s “OMG” the #1 song of 2010, and clearly we’re not alone in our admiration. But what is it like to watch it performed night after night? Miguel, who is currently opening for Usher’s OMG Tour gave us a little insight.

“There’s so much anticipation for this song when he comes out, and he really gives the fans what they want,” Miguel laughs. “He kills it every night.”

Before his latest string of hits, Usher was out of the spotlight for a period of time in 2009, when he was dealing with personal issues including a divorce. Miguel finds his 2010 comeback inspiring.

“There was a period of time, when a lot of people didn’t believe in Usher and thought he was finished … just kind of going to ride off into the sunset and disappear,” the up-and-coming singer noted.

With the release of Raymond vs. Raymond and its extended, companion EP, Versus, in 2010, Usher proved the skeptics wrong with chart-toppers including “OMG” and “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love.”

“He’s such a tremendous example of perseverance and determination,” Miguel beamed. “I was there throughout this album, so I’ve seen the adversity that he’s had to overcome perception-wise.”

MTV News’ Top 25 Songs of 2010 have all been counted down. But the fun isn’t over yet: We still want to see your picks in the comments below!

Usher Gets Sick, Walks Offstage Mid-Show In Berlin

Singer cancels kick off date of European leg of his OMG Tour due to illness.

Usher was forced to delay the kick off of his European OMG Tour on Wednesday night in Berlin because of illness. In a statement released to fans, the singer apologized for the last-minute scratch, saying he felt he was suffering from a “sinus complication.” Although the gig was rescheduled for Thursday night at the O2 World arena in Berlin, his German fans apparently weren’t appeased by his effort.

“I am truly sorry to all my fans in Berlin who were inconvenienced by tonight’s postponement of the show,” the singer said in a statement about Wednesday’s aborted concert. “I was ill and felt that I would not have been able to give them the show that they properly deserve. … I am looking forward to performing tomorrow and giving Berliners a great show.”

According to the statement, the singer received treatment from doctors for a sinus issue that affected his balance, but a visibly still-ailing Usher was unable to finish the Thursday make-up show, reportedly abandoning the stage after just five songs.

On Friday (January 14), a follow-up statement from his spokesperson confirmed that he was too ill to play Thursday night’s Berlin date and has been forced to reschedule the next three dates on the tour as well. The Rotterdam show originally scheduled for this week has been moved to March 1 and a show in Antwerp, also slated for this week, has been bumped to March 7.

The statement also updated the singer’s condition: “Usher is suffering from upper respiratory illness, which is currently preventing him from performing a proper show. After consultation with doctors, he has been advised to reschedule the upcoming dates in order to get the rest he needs to ensure a complete recovery.”

Footage posted on YouTube that was purportedly taken at the make-up performance in Berlin shows Usher standing silently at the microphone seemingly unable to sing, with fans booing him at first and then chanting, “Usher, Usher,” as he approaches the microphone and apologizes to them for his struggles. “I appreciate your support,” he told the fans wearily.

“I have been very excited about my European Tour and I deeply regret having to reschedule the shows,” the singer said in the new statement. “I am truly sorry for any inconvenience I have caused my fans. My fans are the best in the world and I am looking forward to getting better so that I can give them the show they deserve.”

Usher wrapped up the North American leg of his tour in December and his overseas dates are slated to last through the spring.

What do you think of the fans’ reaction to Usher’s walking offstage mid-show? Tell us in the comments.

‘Sherlock Holmes’ Sequel Shows Off Downey And Law’s ‘Brotherhood’

MTV News visited the ‘Game of Shadows’ set on its final day of production.

MTV News’ arrival on the U.K. set of “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” marked a melancholy occasion. Not because things weren’t going well on the sequel to 2009′s $520 million-grossing hit, or because stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law weren’t happy to see us.

But our January visit coincided with Law’s final day in production, and he and Downey felt like they were just getting warmed up.

“We were talking so much about the possibilities of more, and loads of ideas and situations, on the first one,” said Law, who returns to the fold as sidekick Watson to Downey’s ass-kicking Holmes. “We’ve got even more ideas now, and I hope we’re going to be allowed to do another one again.”

“We’re clinging on to this thing,” Downey laughed. “It’s going to have claw marks in it when we let go.”

Warner Bros. hardly wants the duo to relinquish the new franchise anytime soon. While the characters are based on Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic 19th-century literary creations — ones that hardly had the contemporary appeal of a caped superhero — the success of the ’09 flick was anything but assured. Yet under the steady guidance of director Guy Ritchie and keying off the bromantic chemistry of its two male leads, “Sherlock Holmes” grossed $62 million over its opening weekend — even as it went head-to-head with “Avatar.”

Now they’re back, and they’ve asked Noomi Rapace, the star of the Swedish-language “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” trilogy, to join up as a gypsy. Or as Ritchie put it to us, “A gypsy princess with balls — that’s what Noomi brings to the table.”

The sequel focuses on a web of conspiracies overseen by nefarious Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris). After Rapace’s gypsy meets up with Holmes and Watson in London, the story pushes out of the city and takes on a far greater scope than the first one. But ultimately, like that ’09 film, whether or not the sequel works will rest greatly on the sizzling back-and-forth between Downey and Law. From what we saw on the U.K. set, no one should be worried.

“It feels a bit like a relay team,” Law said their dynamic. “He leads, then he hands the baton off to me, but it’s done subconsciously.”

“I also think there are two kinds of performers,” added Downey. “I’ve heard of, and I guess I’ve experienced the kind that are like, ‘You want to play ping-pong? Because I’ll kick your ass!’ Everything is about, ‘I’ll do it better than you.’ Whereas, we become this third thing, this brotherhood.”

Check out everything we’ve got on “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.”

Robert Pattinson Plays ‘Jacob’ In ‘Water For Elephants’

Character’s name ironically the same as Taylor Lautner’s in ‘Twilight Saga.’
By Eric Ditzian

Robert Pattinson in “Water For Elephants”

From what he laughingly dubbed “the middle of nowhere Canada,” Robert Pattinson called in to Ryan Seacrest’s radio show on Thursday morning (March 3) to chat about working with vampire babies in “Breaking Dawn” and animals in “Water for Elephants,” an upcoming drama in which — taking an inadvertent cue from Taylor Lautner’s “Twilight” character — he plays a man named Jacob.

“It is quite funny. After I read it, that was actually one of my main concerns — my only concern,” Pattinson said of taking on the role. “The fact that he’s Polish — Jacob Jankowski — kind of takes away from it. It’s very different from ‘Twilight.’ ”

The British actor described “Water for Elephants” as a “big, beautiful, old-fashioned love story” set in a 1930s circus and starring himself and Reese Witherspoon as “lovers.” We got our first look at footage from the new movie, which hits theaters April 22, late last year, and more official video footage is slated to pop up online on Thursday. Of working with elephants, Pattinson said, “They’re the most sophisticated, gentle creatures you could possibly hope to work with.”

He was less forthcoming about working with those much-discussed vampire babies in “Breaking Dawn.” “It’s all secret. I’m going to get beaten if I say anything,” he laughed.

When Seacrest pointed out that he read about the young vampires in the current issue of Vanity Fair, in an interview with RPattz himself, the actor responded, “Oh really? That’s why I got beaten last night!”

Pattinson said he’s got two more months of shooting in Canada on “Breaking Dawn” before heading straight into the press tour for “Water for Elephants.” There will be no post-”Twilight” vacation for the guy, but he doesn’t seem to mind.

“I’m just about catching up to where it took off,” he said of adjusting to his fame. “I’m pretty happy about the way things have gone.”

Check out everything we’ve got on “Water for Elephants.”

Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Fashions Decoded

Gaga’s inner circle reveals the secrets behind the looks in the video.
By Jocelyn Vena

While its visuals were no doubt memorable for fans of the “Born This Way” video, Lady Gaga’s funky fashions have also caught the eye of fashionistas everywhere. The video’s creative director, Laurieann Gibson, credits Gaga’s stylist, Nicola Formichetti, for embracing eye-catching couture for the Nick Knight-directed clip.

“When we found Nicola Formichetti — we found him when we were doing Much Music — before that we were just basically hustling and she was making a lot of the costumes, and we were grinding and America Apparel was our best friend,” Gibson recalled. “And then we found Nicola and he just got it. So when we’re on set, the Haus is such a collaboration, and Nicola is inspired and loves the passion of the dance. He is fashion, and him and Gaga together are magic. To see them push and pull, it’s just a real process. It’s like the Factory. It’s very Warhol how we operate.”

Formichetti blogged about the video’s expansive fashion credits. In the opening sequence of the video, the star wears a head accessory by Alexis Bittar, a diamond neckpiece by Erickson Beamon with earrings by Pamela Love, and a stained-glass dress by Petra Storrs. Gaga also wears finger rings by Erickson Beamon and the technical chiffon was designed by Thierry Mugler.

During the birthing scene, co-star Raquel Zimmermann wears a bodysuit by Atsuko Kudo and a neckpiece by the Baroness. Gaga wears shoes by Natacha Marro. In the following scene, Zimmerman wears boots by Kobi Levi. And for Gaga’s floating head scene, she wears Kudo and Levi, as well.

During the evil-Gaga gun scene, the singer dons knife shoes by Mugler, a dress by Sorcha O’ Raghallaigh and gloves by Portolano.

When the song finally kicks in, Gaga wears skimpy lingerie that includes a bra by OMD, underwear by NYC Sex Trash by Stephanie Paterek, gloves by LaCrasia and customized half-sole shoes by Capezio. She completes the look with a special “BTW” jacket by TomTom.

For the “Born This Way” skeleton scene, both she and her skeleton lover, Rico, wear tuxedos by Mugler. For the orgy, the slime is courtesy of Bart Hess. For her Michael Jackson impression in the alley, Gaga wears a shirt and pants by Haus of Gaga, shoes by Natacha Marro, a Billykirk belt and LaCrasia gloves. As the video closes out, the unicorn horn is courtesy of Jennifer Behr.

‘American Idol’ Top 12 Girls: Thia Megia, Pia Toscano Show Star Power

Ashthon Jones and teen Lauren Alaina also had strong showings.
By Gil Kaufman

Photo: Michael Becker / FOX

The fellas had their chance on Tuesday night, so on Wednesday (March 2), this year’s “American Idol” top 12 women took the stage in an effort to earn their place in the finals.

By night’s end, Pia Toscano and Ashthon Jones emerged as the ones to beat, while teens Thia Megia and Lauren Alaina appeared to have also punched their cards into the top 10.

Beyoncé impersonator Ta-Tynisa Wilson, 20, did the honors and went first, singing Rihanna’s “Only Girl (In the World),” while wearing a geometric-patterned poodle skirt. Though she looked the part, her thin, squeaky vocals were way off and the band’s tinny new wave arrangement did her no favors.

Jennifer Lopez said it started off shaky, but she liked how Wilson played to the crowd and disagreed strongly with Randy Jackson, who wasn’t afraid to say it was just a’ight and didn’t really show anything unique.

One of the most promising singers, 26-year-old Milwaukee stadium attendant Naima Adedapo isn’t just a great singer, she also designed the beautiful canary-yellow Geisha-inspired dress that she wore while singing one of her favorite tunes, the “Porgy and Bess” classic “Summertime.” Bringing a finger-snapping, sultry sass to the oft-sung tune, Adedapo worked the stage, the crowd and the judges while showing off her rich range and effortless, Erykah Badu-like star quality.

J.Lo called her “an exotic flower in a rose garden,” but once again Randy … not so much. He called it lounge act-y and a pale comparison to former “Idol” champ Fantasia’s version, noting that she pulled it off at the finish with a strong note.

Former bathtub saleswoman Kendra Chantelle, 22, slowed things down with a slinky take on Christina Aguilera‘s “Impossible.” Wearing skintight black leather pants and a body-hugging top, she didn’t try to out-diva the troubled pop star, but instead just sang a competent, growly version of the lesser-known ballad accented by a small end-run of notes.

Jackson was worried when he heard Chantelle was going to sing the tune, but praised her vibrato and compared it to Lauryn Hill’s. “You did it again, voice hot, clothes hot, style hot,” said Steven Tyler, who clearly was enjoying the visual and the audio show during the performance.

This year’s resident oddball Rachel Zevita has finally gotten her shot after four years of trying, and the 23-year-old didn’t disappoint, coming out in a black cape and shedding it with a flurry to reveal a short red dress. She gave Fiona Apple’s breakthrough 1996 hit “Criminal” a jazzbo tilt, missing a lot of the notes, but putting lots of energy and sass into the performance.

“I loved your strut, I loved your swagger, I loved your moves,” Tyler said. “A little too Broadway for me, not that that’s a bad thing, Broadway could be your niche.” Zevita said she’d never really sung like that before, which led Lopez to wonder why she chose that song and arrangement and whether she aims to be a contemporary star. “It wasn’t great, it wasn’t good,” Randy said simply.

Fiery Latina singer Karen Rodriguez, 21, went the full ballad route with another “Idol” staple, Mariah Carey’s “Hero.” Her vocals were solid, but she threw a curveball by going the funky bilingual route and singing half the lyrics in Spanish.

“Wow, wow, wow,” Lopez enthused, showing off her goose bumps. Randy was finally glad to hear someone make a song their own, suggesting the lyrics sounded even better in Spanish than English. “Definitely a one-of-a-kind singer,” Steven added, suggesting she hook up with male frontrunner Jacob Lusk for a duet.

Louisiana housekeeper and Bette Midler doppelgänger Lauren Turner went topical (peep the lyrics about scrubbing dirty floors) with Etta James’ “Seven Day Fool.” She showed spunk and showcased her rich R&B growl, but the performance seemed a bit old-fashioned for “Idol.”

Not just because she’s an L.A. homegirl, but Randy loved it, calling it a fresh mashup between Amy Winehouse and Florence and the Machine. Tyler agreed, dubbing the performance “spectacular” and admiring the way it went from down low to way up high and everywhere in between.

Nashville’s Ashthon Jones, 24, got seductive with Monica’s suggestive “Love All Over Me,” giving the ladies in the crowd multiple shout-outs and showing off a bit with some big, meaty runs and power notes.

“You’ve got the confidence of a queen and you sing so sweet,” Tyler said. “You go places with your voice few have gone.” Because she knows, Lopez said Jones had all the makings of a diva: the big hair, the body, the moves, the composure and the confidence.

Hollywood’s Julie Zorrilla, 20, took a big gamble with season-one winner Kelly Clarkson’s “Breakaway,” coming out tentative with shaky vocals and not much personality, mostly failing to give the song that signature spark Randy’s been looking for.

The judges weren’t feeling it. Lopez said it was not great and lacked a connection to the lyrics and personality, while Randy, shocker, said it paled in comparison to Clarkson’s original. Personality-plus singer Haley Reinhart poured into a tight black mini-dress and made love to the audience during Alicia Keys’ “Fallin’,” throwing in some growly accents, shoulder rolls and high runs in an attempt to make the song her own.

Again, Jackson didn’t think it did anything for Reinhart, missing her husky, Janis Joplin-like tone, though Steven said it had the right amount of sexy rasp, attitude and vocal coloration.

Next up were the season’s two youngest female contestants, starting with 16-year-old Thia Megia, who brought things all the way down with the Irene Cara “Fame” classic “Out Here on My Own.” Singing in a spotlight a cappella at first, Megia once again showed precocious talents, belting out the ballad with confidence and a powerhouse voice.

“Sometimes a person’s pitch can be so perfect it doesn’t matter what song they sing,” Tyler gushed, marveling at the talent she’s amassed at her young age. Lopez loved the captivating, quiet confidence and Randy said the quality of Megia’s tone was dead-on, again comparing it to the late Michael Jackson.

Fellow youngster, Georgia firecracker and early favorite Lauren Alaina, 16, has proven expert at working the judges and she mixed it up a bit with Reba McEntire’s country stomper “Turn on the Radio.” The vocals were a bit shaky at times, but Alaina confidently worked the stage and got the crowd hyped with her infectious energy.

“You don’t even have to try … the voice is just so effortless,” Lopez said, marveling at Alaina’s natural talent, while Jackson said the high-schooler doesn’t even realize how much potential she has.

The night’s final slot belonged to Pia Toscano, 22, the raven-haired former makeup artist who opted for the Pretenders’ go-to singing competition staple “I’ll Stand By You.” She looked like a star in her glittery black cocktail dress and sang a solid version of the tune, hitting her mark in a slightly overwrought arrangement and ending with some big, showy notes at the end that sounded flat on TV, but clearly moved the crowd.

And the judges, who jumped up to give her a standing ovation as Randy guaranteed Toscano earned a spot in the top 10. “You were saving that for when it counts … it was out of this world,” Lopez added.

“Idol” returns on Thursday night for the results show, when five men and five women will move into the top 10 and the judges will make their wild card picks.

Which girls did you think killed it on Wednesday night? Let us know in the comments below!

Is Beyonce Almost Finished With Her New Album?

‘I probably won’t get on this album, but hopefully the next one,’ singer/songwriter Sia says of song she pitched for Beyonce’s new album.
By James Dinh

As Britney Spears and Lady Gaga gear up to release new albums, there’s another pop heavyweight who may offer them some friendly competition: Beyoncé. Details surrounding the singer’s next album remain scarce, but according to a few of the project’s collaborators, Bey is almost finished recording the follow-up to 2008′s I Am … Sasha Fierce and has managed to hit the studio with an extensive list of producers.

After gushing about her high hopes for working with Beyoncé, Australian songstress Sia revealed that she told B’s behind-the-scenes team that she wanted to lend a creative hand for the new album. “So I just said to all the producers, writers, everyone, help me make this happen, and then Diplo e-mailed me and said, ‘where are you in the world right now? would you be interested in flying to New York? I’m writing with Beyoncé,’ and I was like, ‘Yesss!’ ” the singer told MTV Australia.

Despite Diplo’s offer, Sia said she was unable to fly out because of schedule conflicts, but is in the process of pitching songs to Beyoncé. When asked if her submissions were for Beyoncé’s forthcoming LP, Sia said, “Well, there’s only one song left for this album, so I probably won’t get on this album, but hopefully the next one. That’s my dream, that’s my goal.”

Sia isn’t the only collaborator that has suggested Beyoncé is close to wrapping up studio sessions for the project. Sleigh Bells have confirmed working with the singer, but are weary on whether their work with the songstress will make the final cut. Speaking with NME.com, guitarist Derek Miller admitted, “I actually have no idea if the collaboration will ever be released.”

While Miller remained tight-lipped on details regarding the song (or songs?), the Sleigh Bells bandmate confessed that the collabo is just one of her many musical partnerships, saying, “Beyoncé works with whoever she wants to work with, probably 30 or 40 producers. It’s a totally different world from what I’m used to. So for me, it’s just exciting to hear something that I worked on but I can’t really say any more than that.”

Sia and the Sleigh Bells join a long list of other collaborators who have been tapped to work on Beyoncé’s new album, including Ne-Yo, S1, Jim Jonsin, Sean “The Pen” Garrett, The-Dream and Tricky Stewart.

Who do you want to see Beyoncé collaborate with on her new album? Share your suggestions in the comments.

Lady Gaga To Preview New Track During Paris Fashion Show

Gaga will serve as musical director for Thierry Mugler’s live-streamed show on Wednesday.
By James Dinh

It’s a good week for little monsters. On Monday, Lady Gaga unveiled her sci-fi-inspired new video for “Born This Way,” and on Wednesday, the pop star will debut a brand-new song during a Paris fashion show for Thierry Mugler‘s latest women’s wear collection.

As she did in January, when she previewed a remix of a song called “Scheiße,” Gaga will serve as the musical director of Mugler’s runway show, which will be streamed live at 3 p.m. ET. The tune she premieres will likely be “Judas,” the second single off the singer’s highly anticipated Born This Way album.

This isn’t the only sneak peek that the pop singer has in store for her legion of little monsters. During a radio interview with the U.K.’s Capital FM on Monday, the songstress revealed that she may perform a new song called “Americano,” which also is set to appear on her forthcoming LP, during her final Monster Ball show, in Mexico City.

With all the buzz surrounding Gaga’s new tracks, MTV News took the opportunity to sit down with Fernando Garibay, who co-produced many of the songs on Born This Way, including the single “Judas.”

‘Judas’ is produced by RedOne and Gaga, obviously, and it’s a statement about, again I can’t speak for her, but what I gather is it’s about sometimes not choosing the right choice,” he said. “But you can’t deny that the choice is not a part of you and who you are.”

Will you tune in to the Mugler live stream to hear Gaga’s new song? Tell us in the comments.

Justin Bieber Asks Fans To Donate To Charity For His 17th Birthday

‘I really want my birthday to be all about helping others,’ teen star shared on Charity: Water’s website.

Ever wonder what you might get Justin Bieber for his 17th birthday? Well, the pop star has the answer. In honor of his big day, he’s working with the nonprofit Charity: Water, requesting that his fans donate money to the cause that brings clean water to developing nations.

“I have had an incredible year and it is all due to the fans helping me live my dream. I’m turning 17 years old on Tuesday [March 1] and have so much to be grateful for!” Bieber wrote on the charity’s website. “So this year, I really want my birthday to be all about helping others. Instead of asking for gifts, I’m asking friends, family and fans to consider donating $17 for my 17th birthday to help make a change,” he continued. “One hundred percent of all donations go directly to building clean water projects in developing countries with Charity: Water, and we’ll be able to see photos and GPS of the projects we helped build!”

The teen star then gave his fans some facts about why they should get involved. “Together, we’ve made a big difference for many causes. Did you know that about 4,500 kids die each day from waterborne disease?” he shared. “By building clean water projects for villages that need them, we can prevent this! I want to make my birthday matter this year — let’s make it so more kids can grow up to have a 17th birthday like me. Join me to make a change.

“I’m really so grateful for my family, friends and fans — and I believe we can do something big to help bring clean water to people in need,” he added. “Even if you don’t have $17 to give, I just ask you to go out in your community and try and make a positive difference. Even the smallest act of kindness can go a long way. Thanks and God Bless! #makeachange.”

As it turns out, his call has already been answered by his fans. Charity: Water tweeted, ” Thanks to all you Beliebers, we hit $7 million raised on mycharity: water today! #makeachange.”

Justin Bieber Vintage Video: His First Meeting With Usher

Justin Timberlake also wanted to sign Bieber, ‘Never Say Never’ star said in 2009.
By Jocelyn Vena

Photo: Brian Phares/MTV News

Just as the world was learning who Justin Bieber was, MTV News caught up with the shaggy-haired singer in September 2009. He was gearing up to release his debut album, My World, and plotting his pop-world domination. In the year and a half since that interview, Bieber has done the nearly impossible, launching himself into the pop mega-sphere.

In the chat, Bieber recalled how he and his manager, Scooter Braun, met and eventually got big names interested in signing the teen.

“My manager found me on YouTube. He flew me out to Atlanta for the first time — I’d never actually been on a plane before. He flew me to Atlanta where i was going to the studio to meet some people,” he recalled.

“And Usher happened to roll up in his Range Rover. I ran up to him, and I was like, ‘Usher, I love your songs. Want me to sing you one?’ The politest possible way he could say no, he did. … I took the hint. I didn’t get to sing for him: He had to run into a studio session.”

But later, Usher was beckoning the teen back to the ATL. “He actually watched my videos — after my manager got to talking to him — and was like, ‘I should have let this kid sing,’ and flew me back to Atlanta where I got to sing for him in a proper setting. A week later, I had a meeting with Justin Timberlake, who also wanted to sign me, so they both kind of wanted me.”

As the story goes, Bieber went with Usher, and the two never looked back.

“As far as Usher being my mentor, he’s definitely given me words of wisdom. I hear it from everybody, but definitely to hear it from Usher is great, just to stay humble and grounded is very important,” he explained.

“There’s a lot of people, especially young stars, that have gone down the wrong path, and I definitely plan to stay humble and stay grounded and keep my family first, because that stuff really is important in life.”

On Friday, Justin Bieber’s 3-D documentary, “Never Say Never,” opens. The film takes a look at how the teen star worked to hit it big. MTV News has been chatting with him along the way, from the time he first burst on the scene in 2009 until now, as he embarks on a huge 2011 that will include a tour and more new music.

Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ Video Premieres Monday

Clip makes its TV debut at 5 p.m. ET on MTV’s ‘The Seven.’

The time is finally here, Little Monsters! Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” video will premiere on Monday.

The Nick Knight-directed video (which also had some directing assistance from Gaga, her Haus creative team and choreographer Laurieann Gibson) will make its TV debut at 5 p.m. ET on MTV’s “The Seven” and will hit the Web at 11 a.m. ET that same day when it premieres on Perez Hilton’s website.

Gaga hinted at the premiere late Wednesday night, when she tweeted, “You did it Monsters! Born This Way is #1 in 14 countries + were #1 again on Hot 100! Thank you for believing! Video Monday 28th 11am Est.”

Perez Hilton further reports that another cut of the video featuring an acoustic version of the single will be available on iTunes at a later time. All proceeds from that clip will go to charity.

When “The Seven” caught up with Gibson recently, she spoke very highly of the video. “I will tell you it is a life-changing experience,” the choreographer said. “You can expect the highest level of execution in vocal music art and dance … but you will be shocked.”

Gaga herself confirmed that sentiment in a recent radio interview, saying the video is about “the birth of a new race within the race of humanity. The birth of a new race that doesn’t bear any prejudices. I think the most important thing is that I continue to grow, and I knew when I put [out] ‘BTW’ it would be a transitional moment, because it doesn’t sound like [my previous singles].”

Are you excited for the “Born This Way” video? Let us know in the comments below!

Justin Bieber Reveals Birthday Plans, Talks Haircut

‘I’m just going to relax,’ singer says of his plans.
By Jocelyn Vena

We imagine what Justin will be doing on his birthday
Photo: Getty Images

Justin Bieber turns 17 on March 1, and he’s revealing what his plans are for the big day.

“I only have, like, four days, so I’m just going to relax, because I start my world tour starting on [March 4] — so just going to mentally prepare and just relax,” Justin told “Entertainment Tonight.” “No birthday bash. … Hopefully my grandparents will be out here and I’ll be able to spend time, a little bit, with them. My grandma makes the best cheesecake — cherry cheesecake. She made that for my 13th birthday.”

Of course, Bieber’s birthday isn’t the only thing making headlines these days. His new haircut has also been causing quite the hoopla, but Bieber seems to be brushing it off. “I just wanted to [cut my hair], that’s all. Not really a big reason; I just woke up and said, ‘I don’t want this anymore,’ so I just cut it,” he said. “It’s not really about that. You know, the fans really liked it, but they’ll like me no matter what, because I think it’s about the music. I’m really excited to see what the fans overseas think and take it day by day.”

Bieber will re-release his 3-D flick “Never Say Never” this weekend. “It’s 40 minutes of extra footage, so it’s basically like a new movie,” he says. “It’s real exciting, because it shows me and my friends more and it shows a different part of the concert, so it’s going to be great. Hopefully all the fans will go back and watch it.”

Next week, in addition to his birthday, Bieber will also kick off his European tour. “I’m excited to see what [Willow Smith] brings to the table,” he said. “We start on March 4, so she’s really excited, and she told me that she can’t wait — and she’s adorable — so I can’t wait.

“I have such great people around me and such good family,” he added. “I just want to be a good role model to people, and to be able to just make good music. … I’m going to make mistakes, but it’s about learning from them and becoming better. … My movie shows that anything is possible and dreams do come true. … Remember to always stay humble and always be gracious and anything can happen.”

What do you think about Bieber’s new ‘do? Let us know in the comments!

Usher ‘Got A Good Laugh’ From Fan Kicking Him In The Face

‘It looked worse than it actually was,’ the ‘OMG’ singer laughs about accidental blow during concert serenade.
By Mawuse Ziegbe

Usher’s club-rattling jam “OMG” may “kill it every night” according to tourmate Miguel, but when the Atlanta crooner hit Madison Square Garden earlier this week, he was almost taken out by a clumsy fan.

When the singer touched down in New York on Monday, he indulged a super amped fan’s fantasy by pulling her onstage for an intimate flirty serenade of “Trading Places.” As Usher and the concertgoer got cozy on a recliner, she swiveled around to face the crooner — knocking him squarely in his mug with her foot. She began apologizing profusely as Usher briefly paused to collect himself. But the superstar took the strike in stride, quipping, “We play rough in the bed. We kick each other in the face and all type of good stuff.”

Although Usher brushed off the blow, the moment did make an impression on him.

“In all my years, this is one of the most interesting experiences. I got a kick out of it!” he told Us Weekly. The singer assured fans that the knock wasn’t that bad. “It looked worse than it actually was. My audience and I got a good laugh.”

As for the fan, the “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love” star maintained everything is all good on that front too. “Wherever you are baby, don’t feel bad,” Usher said. “No hard feelings.”

As Miguel has noted, Usher isn’t one dwell on drama, whether it’s cranking out another hit album or weathering an unexpected hit from a fan.

“He’s such a tremendous example of perseverance and determination,” Miguel recently told MTV News. “I was there throughout this album, so I’ve seen the adversity that he’s had to overcome perception-wise.”

What do you think of Usher’s response to getting knocked in the head by a fan? Tell us in the comments!

Lady Gaga Previews Born This Way Tracks

Rolling Stone heard four new songs, which seem to draw from the past while still pushing the envelope.
By MTV News Staff Report

Lady Gaga
Photo: Michael Caulfield/ Getty Images

Hours before reviving her long-running Monster Ball Tour in Atlantic City, New Jersey, recently, Lady Gaga gave Rolling Stone magazine a sneak peek at four songs off her upcoming Born This Way album … and from the sound of things, she’s not only pushing the boundaries, she’s borrowing from some of the best in the business.

For example, E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons, who lends his prodigious skronk to a pair of the songs — “Edge of Glory” and “Hair” — or Nine Inch Nails, circa Trent Reznor’s Broken era (on “Hair,” which also apparently draws inspiration from ’80s singer Pat Benatar’s “We Belong” and the inspirational, all-encompassing lyrics of LG’s own “Born This Way”). Another song, “Judas,” which is set to be the second single off Born This Way, is described by Rolling Stone writer Matthew Perpetua as “a classic Lady Gaga pop banger,” with a “thumping, house music breakdown” and a vocal hook “that borrows a bit of Rihanna’s distinctive cadence.”

“Edge” is “a massive power ballad with heavy club beats” that also contains “an element of cheesiness” and an “Eighties stadium rock vibe.” “Scheiée” — a remix of which Gaga actually debuted last month at a fashion show in Paris — contains flavors of ’90s dance hits by the likes of C&C Music Factory, Snap! and RuPaul, and a chorus that “vaguely” recalls Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger.” And “Hair” features LG proudly proclaiming “I am my hair!” for reasons unknown.

On Friday, Gaga’s “Born This Way” officially became the fastest-selling song in iTunes history, having blown past the million-download mark in just five days. The song is also #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and sits atop the charts in 23 different countries. The video is reportedly set to premiere this week.

Gaga’s Born This Way album is due May 23.

Giveaway: Phil&Teds Smart Bundle Stroller (Value: $395)

Feb 28 2011 8:21amMar 4 2011 7:00pm

Phil&teds smart stroller bundle with verso adapter is a sleek & strong aluminum framed compact, weighing approximately 18lbs yet featuring a flat fold, a seat recline, bassinet & infant car seat adaptability and now a new adapter called the verso which allows you to reverse the seat so the child face the parent.

Innovative technology is at the heart of the smart‘s smarts. The AEROCORE seat, first introduced on the highpod highchair earlier in 2010, seeks to resolve key parental stroller issues. Its unique properties ensure that the seat is ergonomically supportive yet cushioning, to keep child occupants happy for longer; lightweight yet strong & durable, to trump an umbrella’s flimsy frame and easily torn fabric; breathable yet waterproof and wipe-clean, to counter the lack of hygiene and all weather suitability of all other compact strollers. “We’ve been in this industry for quite a few years now, and we’ve long dreamed of reinventing the compact stroller. Central to that, in our view, was cracking the code on seating. To us the AEROCORE seat is the holy grail of stroller seating, and this is really just the start of its application.”

Justin Bieber Reveals Birthday Plans, Talks Haircut

‘I’m just going to relax,’ singer says of his plans.

MSNBC Commentator Rachael Maddow Gives Props to Florida Death Metal

When political commentators mention extreme metal on the air it’s usually in reference to something tragic like a school shooting, church burning or suicide pact. But when MSNBC liberal correspondent Rachael Maddow invoked the names of Cannibal Corpse, Six Feet Under, Obituary, Death and Deicide it was mostly to take a stab at Republicans, not [...]

Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Other Stars Make Forbes’ Top-Earning Of 2010 List

Taylor Swift, Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus also made the magazine’s top 20 list of Hollywood moneymakers.

On the East Coast, revenue streams are slowly rising as banks are still cratering and trying to recover from the recession. But out West, money ain’t a thing, as Jermaine Dupri and Jay-Z once rapped.

Forbes has released their list of Hollywood’s 20 Highest Earners of 2010, with Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus among those rubbing elbows with the likes of power players like Oprah Winfrey.

The venerable talk-show host topped the list with a whopping $315 million haul. Winfrey’s earnings were generated for the most part by her multimedia deals, which include a syndication deal for her TV show, a magazine and her soon-to-be-launched network.

“Avatar” creator James Cameron came in second, more than $100 million behind Winfrey, with a tally of $210 million. Director and playwright Tyler Perry ($125 million), blockbuster movie producer Michael Bay ($120 million) and golfer Tiger Woods ($105 million) rounded out the top five.

Beyoncé was the only pop star to break the top 10. The “Single Ladies” superstar landed at #9, sandwiched between George Lucas and Dr. Phil. Mrs. Carter, whose hubby, Jay-Z, was named Hip-Hop’s Cash King by Forbes in August with a tally of $63 million, pulled down $87 million over the past 12 months.

The blond-haired trio of Britney Spears ($64 million), Lady Gaga ($62 million) and Madonna ($58 million) made their mark on the list at numbers 13, 14 and 15, respectively.

Pop tarts Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift capped the list. The young stars placed at 18 and 19 on the list, with Disney star Cyrus pocketing $48 million, and country singer Swift depositing $45 million into her bank account.

Hollywood’s 20 highest-earning men and women of 2010, according to Forbes:

1. Oprah Winfrey, $315 million
2. James Cameron, $210 million
3. Tyler Perry, $125 million
4. Michael Bay, $120 million
5. Tiger Woods, $105 million
6. Jerry Bruckheimer, $100 million
7. Steven Spielberg, $100 million
8. George Lucas, $95 million
9. Beyoncé, $87 million
10. Dr. Phil, $80 million
11. Simon Cowell, $80 million
12. Jerry Seinfeld, $75 million
13. Britney Spears, $64 million
14. Lady Gaga, $62 million
15. Madonna, $58 million
16. Sandra Bullock, $56 million
17. Ellen DeGeneres, $55 million
18. Miley Cyrus, $48 million
19. Taylor Swift, $45 million
20. Judge Judy Sheindlin, $45 million

Lady Gaga Fans Expecting ‘Born This Way’ Video To Be ‘Fabulous’

‘She outdoes herself each time,’ one Gaga fan tells MTV News.

Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” music video premieres on Monday (February 28), and the star’s dedicated legion of Little Monsters cannot wait to see what their Mother Monster has up her sleeve in the Nick Knight-directed music video.

When MTV News spoke to a small grouping of Gaga’s loyal fans, they revealed what they think might make the final cut of the video, which was a collaboration between Knight, the singer’s Haus of Gaga creative team and choreographer Laurieann Gibson.

A fan named Emily guessed that the clip might seek some inspiration from Gaga’s stark, egg-y Grammy Awards spectacle earlier this month. “Maybe kind of like her Grammy performance,” she pondered. “I don’t know. I have no idea. You never know what the hell she’s gonna come up with.”

“She outdoes herself each time and each time she uses a different director,” Leslie Perkins said. “And each time is beyond the last one. I’m expecting nothing less than fabulous.”

Cayley couldn’t quite put her finger on what the video might look like. She explained, “I don’t know! I can only imagine!”

Mon Cherie and her pal, Pam Kitten, figure that something somewhat shocking will probably come of it all. “There’s not much more of an egg, hon!” Mon Cherie joked. “She comes out of an elephant poop! I don’t know! Nothing shocks me. Lady Gaga — whatever she do is fantastic.”

Some of those same fans recently dished to MTV News about what the song “Born This Way” means to them as Gaga ushers in a new phase of her career. “Do what you want to do!” Mon Cherie previously noted. “I mean, keep it real, keep it safe and keep it legal, but you got to do you, hon.”

Lisa explained that the tune “means no matter what you are, who you are, who you want to be, you just can’t help it, because you were born this way.”

Meanwhile, Gaga revealed during a recent visit to “The Gayle King Show” that she also plans to put out a second “Born This Way” video. The singer said that clip, which will accompany a stripped-down version of the song, “will be released on iTunes.” She added that “a portion of the money raised selling the song [will] go towards an anti-bully charity.”
